An empowering new series from the cyclist who runs Shred-Girls.com is guaranteed to give readers an adrenaline rush–and the confidence girls gain from participating in sports!

It’s time to ride and save the day!

Lindsay can’t wait to spend her summer break reading comics and watching superhero movies–until she finds out she’ll be moving in with her weird older cousin Phoebe instead. And Phoebe has big plans for Lindsay: a BMX class at her bike park with cool-girl Jen and perfectionist Ali.

Lindsay’s summer of learning awesome BMX tricks with new friends and a new bike turns out to be more epic than any comic book–and it’s all leading up to a jumping competition.

But some of the biker boys don’t think girls should be allowed to compete in BMX. Now it’s up to Lindsay, Jen, and Ali to win the competition and prove that anyone can be great at BMX.

Bike Life: Clinics and Conversations = Coming to your area soon !

I am pleased to announce a new element to my offerings here at Smart Athlete.

As requests for speaking to groups and also basic skill clinics are increasing I have been looking for a way to get out and spend in-person time with more people in more areas and make booking such an appointment more straightforward.

Molly Hurford, author, cycling industry personality and Bicycling Magazine Staff Writer has proposed a tour to share the valuable concepts from her latest book, “Saddle, Sore: A Women’s-Only Guide to You and Your bike” combined with mini-clinics going over the basic skills discussed with  The Bike Skills Project

Each event will consist of a combination of a Bike Skills Clinic that really gets back to basics to make your riding on or off-road a lot more enjoyable, and a Conversation event following the clinic, where Molly discusses the top tricks learned while writing Saddle, Sore: A Women-Only Guide to You and Your Bike. Often, there will be wine. There will always be hilarity, and an open space where you can ask your most awkward cycling-related women-specific questions.

For groups that want to open the clinics and/or conversations to both sexes, we will have a third option for Uni-Sex events discussing bike skills, cycling hygiene and enough women’s specific ‘stuff’ to help dads, coaches and friends be better assets to their women cyclist friends.

So in brief if you have a club, team, store, race or group that would benefit from a night of conversation on being more awesome on your bike please contact us through the form (HERE)

Free "Saddle, Sore" resource for Juniors and their Parents.

After bugging Molly to put out a resource for Juniors she has provided this great free document. I wanted to share this with the Juniors I know and coaches/managers of females.

Please check out Molly's offering for females and their parents/coaches etc. This is a great resource that deals with issues that can be sometimes difficult to discuss.

I am finding this book, and now this free edition for juniors, to be a great stepping stone in opening up the communication lines and providing more education on things like Hygiene, Menstruation and Skin irritation. It is important that coaches and athletes are talking about these difficult subjects and that we are familiar with options to best handle them should they come up. Many of these things are relatively minor but left unattended and not discussed can affect training, recovery and health.
I also am finding that guys can learn a fair bit from this book. Learning more about some of the different concerns that the female riders in their lives might deal with and the applicable topics like saddle, sores and washing clothes is not a bad idea.

** The full book can be purchased in electronic format using the Smart Athlete code ' smartgirls ' http://goo.gl/5P5Rol  and goes more into sexual health, common questions/answers and specific conditions.

Saddle, Sore – New Book tackles tough issues

http://eepurl.com/Qb7GL

Above is a link to the newsletter I wrote on Molly Hurford‘s new book “Saddle, Sore”. It is a short, concise and practical look at the issues females face when trying to ride bikes. I believe most males will benefit from reading this as several topics (hygiene, dealing with saddle sores, bike fit, mechanics, skills & coaches ) will be beneficial.

Topics range from skills, mechanics and, of course, saddle sores.Other less easy to talk about issues such as Yeast Infections, periods, and Urinary Track Infections. I am featured at several points in the book. I was honored to be included as an ‘expert’ but my hope is that this opportunity provides me with much more opportunity to learn from a more open dialogue with my clients.

I loved the inclusion of ‘communication with a coach’ sections. The topics in the book, such as discomfort on the bike, and infections,  are so important because they can greatly affect performance . Let’s start talking about this openly. (that is your invitation!) I have already had many clients, male and female, reach out and we are not troubleshooting how to improve comfort, performance and health. So exciting!

Any questions about the book throw a tweet at Molly or Myself
